New construction homes come with a labor warranty from 1 to 2 years on average. The warranty on equipment can be from 5 to 10 years. Most warranties will start with 5 years, however, if you register your equipment with the manufacturer within 90 days you can get an additional 5 years. However, if you can’t find it you can go to the outside unit to locate the brand, model number, and serial number that you will need in order to register your equipment.

When purchasing a pre-owned home you will need to verify if there is a warranty on the equipment (typically your agent should be able to help you with that). Once you have verified that there is a warranty on the equipment then all that will need to be done is a transfer into your name, most manufacturers will give you 90 days to transfer but to be on the safe side try to do it within the first 30 days of the purchase. With a little research and verifying that there is a warranty and properly transferring it into your name can potentially save you hundreds to thousands of dollars on repair or replacement.
